Alternate Approach

The Medicine Wheel

Circular teaching practices are an innovative approach that can be incorporated into education to promote inclusivity, collaboration, and holistic learning. These practices draw inspiration from Indigenous cultures and their emphasis on interconnectedness and circularity.  I have chosen to focus on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the wheel.

“The physical can be transmitted through the land, while the emotional aspect can be developed through a balanced connection between the heart and the head. Mental capacities can be developed through ancestral languages and integrative learning.”

Physical: The physical aspect of the medicine wheel represents the body and the importance of physical well-being. In my practice, I will prioritize creating a safe and healthy learning environment that promotes physical activity, nutrition, and self-care. Encouraging movement breaks, providing nutritious snacks, and fostering a positive body image will be integral to supporting students' physical well-being.

Mental: The mental aspect of the medicine wheel focuses on intellectual growth and knowledge acquisition. I will strive to create a stimulating and inclusive learning environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and curiosity. Incorporating diverse perspectives, encouraging open dialogue, and providing opportunities for independent and collaborative learning would be key elements of this aspect.

Emotional: The emotional aspect of the medicine wheel emphasizes emotional intelligence, empathy, and self-awareness. I will prioritize creating a supportive and nurturing classroom environment where students feel safe to express their emotions, share their experiences, and develop healthy coping mechanisms. Incorporating mindfulness practices, promoting emotional literacy, and fostering positive relationships would be central to supporting students' emotional well-being.

Spiritual: The spiritual aspect of the medicine wheel encompasses a sense of purpose, connection to nature, and personal growth. I will integrate elements of mindfulness, gratitude, and reflection into my practice, allowing students to explore their own values, beliefs, and connections to the world around them. Incorporating nature-based activities, promoting environmental stewardship, and encouraging students to find meaning and purpose in their learning will be essential.
